It is NAFSA membership renewal time again. I encourage you to renew and feel pride in being a NAFSA member. You are a part of an amazing network of individuals who form an organization that continues to be the leader in international education.

I first learned of NAFSA when I went to the International Center at the University of Iowa as a graduate student and asked a foreign student adviser how I could get his job. He smiled, opened a desk drawer, pulled out a NAFSA brochure (this was pre-Internet—yes, I am old), and told me I needed to join. I ended up joining NAFSA and volunteering in his office, and I think that is when I first learned the value of membership. I quickly realized that all the people who knew more about the profession than me were members of this organization. They were truly experts in their field, and it was in no small part due to their association with NAFSA.

Time passed and I became an international student adviser, and when I went to regional and annual NAFSA conferences, I realized that the leaders I wanted to emulate were NAFSA members. To this day, when I look around for advice on specific cases or to strategize on how to further internationalize our campus, I turn to my colleagues across the United States and the world for advice. And guess what? Those colleagues are NAFSA members.

NAFSA has wonderful products and services, and it also has wonderful people; I truly do feel proud to be associated with such an esteemed group. I would love to hear from you about what you think is the most valuable part of being a NAFSA member. And remember—renew!
