Day Trips Near Washington, DC

For those coming to Washington, DC ahead of NAFSA 2019 or staying after, there are many sites to see and experience beyond the city limits. Bordered by Maryland and Virginia, there are many places to vistit during your stay. If you're feeling adventurous, you could visit the Delaware coast or travel to Richmond, Virginia (both are about a two hour drive). If you weren't able to attend NAFSA 2018 in Philadelphia, or want to visit again, the City of Brotherly love is about a three hour drive.

If you don't want to go too far and would rather spend time experiencing the area, there's plenty to do within 50 miles of hte District.

Maryland

Maryland has much to offer beyond the monuments and museums of Washington, DC. Here are a few cities that are worth the trip.

Annapolis

  • Banneker-Douglass museum - Dedicated to preserving Maryland's African American heritage, the museum highlights the work of many famous Maryland residents including Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.
  • U.S. Naval Academy - if you're in town the week before NAFSA 2019, you'll get a chance to experience Commissioning Week events, honoring the First Class Midshipmen who have completed four years at the Academy.
  • Maryland State House – Dating back to 1772, this building is the oldest American state house in continuous legislative use.
  • City Dock - plenty of shopping, restaurants and opportunities to take water tours of the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Sandy Point State Park (A 10 minute drive away from downtown), features opportunities to hike, camp, and hit the beach that borders the Chesapeake Bay!
  • Restaurants - Seafood lovers will especially enjoy the Annapolis dining scene. Don't forget to try Chesapeake Blue Crab (a Maryland staple) and don't forget the Old Bay seasoning!

Baltimore

Whether it involves beaching, hiking, camping, or mainly just relaxing, we hope you enjoy your stay!
