WASHINGTON, November 24, 2015 – Foreign policy journalist and best-selling author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, will speak at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators 2016 Annual Conference and Expo in Denver. Her work frequently focuses on empowering women in developing countries through economic investment. Based on Lemmon’s extensive reporting in Afghanistan, she wrote and published the ground-breaking book, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, a New York Times best-seller on a young entrepreneur who supported her family during the Taliban years.

Lemmon is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a national security and foreign policy contributor to The Atlantic’s Defense One site. She began her career as a journalist in Washington, covering presidential politics and policy issues for the ABC News. Lemmon’s latest book, Ashley’s War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield, chronicles the untold story of the U.S. Army’s all-female team placed alongside combat forces in Afghanistan to help establish connections with women in that country. Lemmon is a graduate of the University of Missouri and also holds an MBA from Harvard University.

“International education plays a critical role in foreign policy and national security,” said Marlene M. Johnson, NAFSA Executive Director and CEO. “Lemmon’s expertise and stories of perseverance and innovation that cut across gender and geographical borders will offer an inspiring perspective for the complex world in which NAFSA members, and the students and scholars they serve, are working to improve.”
