Washington, May 25, 2017 — This week, members of Congress led by Representative Gerald Connolly (VA-11) urged their House colleagues to remember the important contributions of international students and scholars to our nation. The following is a statement from Esther D. Brimmer, Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators:

“Communities, colleges and universities for decades have experienced first-hand the benefits of international students and scholars, and even though they comprise just over five percent of national higher education enrollment, they continue to enrich our classrooms and our communities, bringing academic and cultural benefits alongside economic benefits. Each year, they bring billions of dollars to our nation’s economy and hundreds of thousands of jobs for the American people.

“NAFSA conveys its deepest gratitude for Representatives Gerry Connolly (VA-11), Mike Doyle (PA-14), Jim Himes (CT-4), Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) and Mark Pocan (WI-2) for showing leadership in shining a spotlight on these talented students and scholars and recognizing them as a national resource. If our campuses and communities are to continue to benefit from both the academic and economic benefits these students bring, we must make sure our government policies encourage them to choose the United States as their first choice for higher education. It is vital to have leaders like these in Congress, willing to take a stand and ensure that in these troubled times, we redouble our efforts to be a welcoming nation.”
