WASHINGTON, November 1, 2016 – Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will deliver the opening plenary address at the NAFSA 2017 Annual Conference & Expo. As a longtime journalist and a best-selling author, Wilkerson continues to chronicle the impact of migration and ethnic disparities on both America’s history and future.

“At a time when racial divisions and disparities in United States are deeper than they have in decades, and migration and immigration are the topics of discussion at both dinner tables and political debates across the country, we are excited to hear Isabel Wilkerson speak to the issues of the past and how they relate directly to the problems we face,” explained Marlene M. Johnson, NAFSA Executive Director and CEO. “Our members will truly benefit from her extraordinary insight and research about the disparities that are so pervasive in our economic and political lives.”

Wilkerson spent 15 years writing The Warmth of Other Suns, a book that explores “The Great Migration” of over six million African-Americans who moved from the southern United States during the 20th century in search of a better life. As a journalist, Wilkerson served as Chicago Bureau Chief of The New York Times in 1994. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, she is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and also received the 2015 National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Wilkerson has lectured on narrative nonfiction at the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University and taught Journalism at Princeton, Emory, Northwestern, and Boston universities. Wilkerson also frequently writes op-eds for the New York Times on issues of social injustice and racial equality. She is a graduate of Howard University. She will address the NAFSA 2017 Conference & Expo on May 30, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The opening session featuring Wilkerson is sponsored by Education New Zealand.
