If you are engaged in international education, exchange, or global workforce development your NAFSA membership gives you access to almost 10,000 other international educators, as well as professional information including International Educator magazine, NAFSA.news, best practices and trends, special member-only rates on the NAFSA products, and professional development opportunities you need to excel in your career.

Who Can Join NAFSA?

Any individual, who is interested in NAFSA’s mission and wants to engage with a community of leaders in the field of international education, is encouraged to join the association. NAFSA is an individual membership organization, which means that membership is held by a single person and not an institution.

How Do I Apply for Membership?

You can apply for membership online or by completing the membership application Icon PDF 16 and returning it with payment by fax or mail. If you need assistance applying for membership, contact our offices at 1.202.737.3699 or send an e-mail to membership@nafsa.org.

How Much Does Membership Cost?

The price of membership for 2017 - 2018 (July 1 through June 30) is:

Regular $459
Associate $153

  • Dues must be paid in full at the time a member joins or renews his or her membership
  • Only full-time students, retirees, and community volunteers are eligible for the Associate member rate and verification of eligibility is required at time of joining.
  • For first-time members, there will be an additional $20 processing fee. There is also an additional $70 overseas airmail fee for individuals residing outside the United States, Mexico, or Canada without an APO/AFO address. Please allow 6 weeks for delivery of NAFSA materials.
 

What Methods of Payment are Accepted for Membership Dues?

NAFSA accepts checks and all major credit cards. Payments from a credit/debit card are processed through the NAFSA Shop. Alternatively, you can submit payment via fax to (202) 737-3657 or by mail to:

What Types of Membership Are Offered?

You should apply for a Regular Membership if you are:

  • An individual working for a school, college, university, and/or training or research
  • An individual involved personally or professionally in the field of international education and exchange
  • A representative of an organization involved in implementing or administering international education and exchange, employing paid staff, not affiliated with an academic institution

You should apply for an Associate Membership if you are:

  • A member who desires continued affiliation with NAFSA after retirement
  • A full-time student enrolled in post-secondary institutions
  • A community volunteer who does not receive remuneration for the work he or she does related to international education 

In order to apply for an Associate Membership you must submit your membership application by mail along with verification of your status. If you are retired, please submit a letter that states you have retired. If you are a student, please submit a copy of your most recent transcript or a copy of your student ID that states you are considered to be a full-time student. If you are a community volunteer, please submit a letter from the organization with whom you volunteer that confirms you are not receiving any remuneration for the work you are doing for the organization.Students and community volunteers are required to recertify for associate membership annually before they are able to renew their membership at the associate rate. NAFSA will make the final determination on associate member qualifications.

I am Eligible for an Associate Membership. What Type of Documentation is Required?

For students, we ask that you provide us with documentation that demonstrates your status as a full-time student (transcript, course schedule, etc). If you are a community volunteer or retiree, we request a letter from an appropriate authority that certifies your status as an unpaid volunteer or of your recent retirement.

How Do I Renew my NAFSA Membership?

You can renew your membership with a credit card on your MY NAFSA page. Click on the “Renew my Membership” button on the right side of the page. If you want to pay by fax or by mail, contact us at membership@nafsa.org for an invoice. Please note that the date of your membership application or renewal does not change the date of expiration. A membership renewed in December, 2015 would still expire on June 30, 2016. To take full advantage of the membership year, we advise NAFSA members to apply for or renew their membership in July.

What is the NAFSA Membership Year? When Does My Membership Expire?

NAFSA's membership year runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. Please note that the date of your membership application or renewal does not change the date of expiration. For example, a membership renewed in December, 2018 would still expire on June 30, 2019. To take full advantage of the membership year, we advise NAFSA members to apply for or renew their membership before it expires on June 30.

Am I the Member or is My Institution?

You are the member. NAFSA does not offer institutional memberships, but most NAFSA memberships are paid through institutions. An institution that has paid for a membership “owns” the membership and may transfer a current membership to another person at that institution.

Can I Share my Membership Discounts with Co-Workers?

Membership is tied to a specific individual. Only that individual will receive membership pricing on materials, conferences and events. Membership may not be shared among several people at the institution.

How Do I Update My Member Profile?

You will not get the most out of your membership if NAFSA does not have your correct information. It is the responsibility of each member to update his or her profile when information changes. To do so, a member may log on to the NAFSA website and make you edits on the "Manage my Profile" page.

I Forgot my Login Credentials. Where can I retrieve my Username/Password?

You may retrieve your login credentials here. Simply enter the email address associated with your membership. An email allowing you to reset your password or recover your username will be sent to that address. If you do not receive the link to reset or recover your password, please be sure to check your SPAM filters. For security reasons, we cannot give anyone access to another individual's account. NAFSA protects the privacy of the original account holder and is committed to building user trust and confidence by promoting, and complying with, business practices that help protect the privacy of our customer and user data. How Do I Transfer My Membership?

Each NAFSA member is permanently assigned a unique membership number that cannot be assigned to another individual. NAFSA membership and benefits cannot shared or be temporarily transferred to another individual. If NAFSA membership dues are paid by the employer:

From July 1 through the end of February

  • The employer can request to permanently transfer a membership to a non-member individual who works at the same institution
  • The new member must have their own profile. If they are a lapsed NAFSA member, they already have one. If not, they’ll need to create one first .
  • The transferred membership will only last the remainder of that membership year.

March 1 through May 31

  • Membership may not be transferred except in cases where the individual holding the membership is no longer employed by the organization.

June

  • Transfer requests must be received before June 1st for memberships that expire on June 30 of that year.
  • By June, NAFSA memberships are due for renewal and cannot be transferred.
  • Employers are encouraged to purchase a new annual NAFSA membership for their employee.

To transfer a current membership, please send an e-mail request to membership@nafsa.org. It can take up to a week for the transfer to be administered.

Can I Publicize My Membership On My Website?

Members may publicize their membership, provided they make clear that they as an individual are a member, and not their organizations. Members may not imply that NAFSA has reviewed or endorsed their programs or activities, or that NAFSA membership confers any endorsement.

Use of the NAFSA logo is prohibited. Institutions who wish to engage with the association can become Global Partners. NAFSA Global Partners are provided with a special logo indicating their participation in the Global Partnership Program page.

What is a Global Partner?

All universities, corporations, and businesses who share NAFSA's mission and would like to have access to unique discounted marketing opportunities are invited to join NAFSA's Global Partnership Program. Your organization will be listed as a current Global Partner and receive discounts including associated individual memberships. In addition, staff within your organization can still hold individual NAFSA memberships.
