Up Close with Terry Gross

Renowned journalist and author Terry Gross was the final plenary speaker at the NAFSA 2018 Annual Conference & Expo in Philadelphia, delivering an insightful and inspiring address to NAFSA 2018 attendees on Friday, June 1. Before her plenary, Gross sat down with NAFSA Vice President for Public Policy and Practice Bonnie Bissonette, EdD, for an Up Close interview. Gross shares her insights of having conducted interviews with politicians and cultural icons for more than 30 years, as well as what she feels are the benefits of international education for everyone.

 

About Terry Gross

Terry Gross is the long-running host and co-executive producer of Fresh Air on National Public Radio. With her distinct conversational interviewing style, Gross can get her guests, who range from politicians to cultural icons, to reveal personal insights and candid truths about themselves and issues impacting the world.

Since 1987, WHYY-FM, a public radio station based in Philadelphia, has produced a daily, one-hour national edition of Fresh Air. The program is broadcast on nearly 600 stations, and it became the first nondrivetime show in public radio history to reach more than 5 million listeners a week.

Fresh Air With Terry Gross has received numerous awards, including the Peabody Award in 1994. Gross received the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Edward R. Murrow Award in 2003 for her contributions to public radio. In 2015 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition, Gross received the 2015 National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Gross is the author of All I Did Was Ask: Conversations With Writers, Actors, Musicians, and Artists.

Gross earned her bachelor’s degree in English and MEd in communications from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
