Award-Winning Actress Anna Deavere Smith to Perform at 2014 NAFSA Annual Conference of International Educators

WASHINGTON, December 18, 2013 - Actress, playwright, professor, and author Anna Deavere Smith will embody the voices of international educators and explore how international education can be a catalyst for change and peace in a dramatic presentation at the opening of the NAFSA Annual Conference on May 27, 2014.

About Anna Deavere Smith

Anna Deavere Smith is known for her one-person shows that focus on pressing social issues. Twilight Los Angeles, about the Los Angeles race riots of 1992, was performed on Broadway and around the country, and her most recent one-person show, Let Me Down Easy, focused on health care in the United States. Smith is also known for her work in Nurse Jackie, The West Wing, The American President, Rachel Getting Married, and Philadelphia.

Smith has been recognized with numerous awards, including the MacArthur Award, the 2012 National Endowment for the Humanities Medal awarded to her by President Obama, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Award, two Obies, two Tony nominations, and she was runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize for her play Fires in the Mirror. In addition to receiving the Dean's Medal from Stanford Medical School, she has received honorary degrees from Juilliard, University of Pennsylvania, Spelman, Williams, Northwestern, and Radcliffe. Smith is a professor at New York University.
