SEVIS Releases

October 26, 2015

SEVIS undergoes regular updates in the form of periodic new releases. Here are the SEVIS System Change Notices for each release in the SEVIS 6.# series.

  • SEVIS Release 6.23 Anticipated System Changes (expected December 4, 2015. Also see SEVP's SEVIS Release 6.23 Planning Guide, on the Study in the States website.
    • New banner, layout, and color scheme, with some inline error handling on the login screen
    • School and sponsor officials will receive additional verification email reminders 60, 45, and 10 days before the deadline of the annual verification for school and sponsor officials
    • Additional detail available in nonimmigrant event history
    • Quick-search feature will allow users to search for an F, M, or J nonimmigrant in the "Enter SEVIS ID" text box to be included in the new SEVIS banner.
    • The Student Header will be streamlined, and allow the user to expand or collapse the header for additional detail
    • Changes to the data fields for F-1 OPT. Currently, there is one screen in SEVIS Real Time Interactive (RTI) that collects data used for processing and monitoring OPT. SEVIS Release 6.23 will divide this into two screens, one for adding OPT and one for adding information about OPT employers.
    • Although employer information will still not be a required element in order to apply for OPT, SEVP has mentioned that they will also add administrative functionality that will allow them to run jobs to terminate records that contain approved post-completion OPT and that do not contain employer information for more than 90 consecutive days following the OPT approval. This action would relate to the 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(E) rule that sets an aggregate limit of 90 days of "unemployment" that can be accrued while on post-completion OPT. SEVP mentioned that they do not yet know when they would turn on this job, but that they would give schools time to get employer information in records before doing so.
    • A new alert will be added: "Students who have Approved OPT without Current Employer Information"
    • One-time report on "Students with Active OPT Employment Prior to the November 2016 Release"
    • Students who are in an active period of Post-Completion OPT but who have an Employer Name field that is left blank for 111 days from the student's Actual OPT Start Date will be automatically terminated with a System Termination reason of "Exceed Unemployment Time." There will also be an alert to provide a list of students whose status has been changed to Terminated for this reason.
    • Modifications to page 2 of Form I-20, including column headings in the Employment Authorizations block and a new Employer Information block; Renaming the "Other Authorizations" block to "Authorized Drop Below Full Course of Study;" and removing the "Event History" block from the Form I-20.
    • A new report called "List of Active Students for Whom a Telephone number and/or E-mail Address is Missing."
    • On the J Exchange Program side, the Shorten Program function will be used to notify DOS of all early program endings other than terminations.
    • On the J Exchange Program side, an Initial status Exchange Visitor record will not be able to be validated more than 30 days before the Program Begin Date.

  • SEVIS Release 6.22 (August 21, 2015)
    • Reformatted Listing of Schools screen: Actions buttons moved to the top to improve usability; drop-down lists now show both school code and school name
    • Restores the ability to use the wildcard functionality on the Given Name field
    • SEVIS Release 6.22.1 (September 18, 2015) removed the "Students without Valid U.S. Addresses Alert" and "Exchange Visitor(s) Without Valid U.S. Addresses Alert," due to AddressDoctor-SEVIS integration issues.

The DSO also can filter the results by employment type. The only type of employment not included is on-campus employment, since that is done “incident to status” and is not approved or recommended through SEVIS.
