Working Together to Internationalize Higher Education

While issues of environment, urban planning, and sustainable development are inherently global, not every degree program has a clearly articulated international component. Creating a curriculum with integrated international experience includes ensuring academically rigorous education abroad experiences, and clearly defining and measuring global competencies in students to assess progress. As part of our comprehensive internationalization efforts, this page provides information and resources for deans, faculty members, senior international officers, and program directors working to internationalize the curriculum.

Architecture for Global Learning
Architecture for Global Learning is a professional enrichment series developed by NAFSA to help faculty, scholars, and administrators strengthen their understanding of global learning and develop their capacity for translating mission-driven institutional global learning goals into concrete curricular and co-curricular experiences that are flexible, rigorous, and relevant to students.

Series II will consist of six, 60-minute e-Seminars delivered throughout the 2017-2018 academic year. Series II will include presentations and discussions with note scholars, researchers, and practitioners focusing on responding to nationalism and xenophobia, the STEAM'D disciplines, foreign language teaching, assessment, and more.

NAFSA Research Symposium

NAFSA Research Symposium events serve the research community in the field of international education and related disciplines by providing researchers and scholars the opportunity to share their work in an academic and professional environment and participate in a critical discussion of the theories, methodologies, and practices being used in their research. As such, the Research Symposium is considered relevant to international education researchers at every stage of their career - graduate students, post-docs, faculty members and practitioners. Research Symposium events are held in the spring and fall, with the next event during IEW 2017 on November 17 at American University in Washington, DC.

NAFSA's second Research Symposium - A Critical Discussion of Theories, Methodologies, and Practices in International Education - provided researchers and scholars in the field of international education and related disciplines the opportunity to share their work in an academic and professional environment, as well as participate in a critical discussion of the theories, methodologies, and practices being used in their research. Developed from the symposium as a resource for scholars and practitioners, the NAFSA Research Symposium Series presents a compilation of original and innovative research in international education. 

Engaging Students, Faculty, and Staff with Issues of Sustainability

Sustainability remains a vital issue in both global and local communities. As environmental and social change accelerates, higher education institutions are developing new ways to help students, faculty, and staff engage in productive ways that enhance community resiliency. In the process, colleges and universities are inventing new strategies to help students gain the skills they need to address complex global issues.

Meet a Thought Leader

Geoffrey Chase, PhD, is dean of undergraduate studies at San Diego State University. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, where he received a BA in English. He also holds an MA in teaching from Miami University of Ohio, an MA in English from Boston College, and PhD in American literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He previously taught in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Miami University of Ohio and served as a Fulbright scholar in Turku, Finland.

Chase joined Northern Arizona University in 1992 as the director of English composition. It was there that he led the Ponderosa Project, a development initiative aimed at helping faculty integrate sustainability into their courses. The Ponderosa Project model has engaged faculty on more than 250 campuses throughout the United States and Canada. In 2004, he coedited Sustainability on Campus: Stories and Strategies for Change. He was a founding board member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and served as its chair from 2008–2011. Chase lectures widely on sustainability in higher education, graduation and retention, and closing the achievement gap.
