Sustainability remains a vital issue in both global and local communities. As environmental and social change accelerates, higher education institutions are developing new ways to help students, faculty, and staff engage in productive ways that enhance community resiliency. In the process, colleges and universities are inventing new strategies to help students gain the skills they need to address complex global issues.

In celebration of Earth Day, join experts in a NAFSA Global Learning Conversation, presented in partnership with the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. Discover the ways in which your campus can empower students, faculty, and staff to think and act in ways that benefit local communities—communities that are embedded in a globally-interconnected world.

Presenters and participants will:

  • Explore models for linking a variety of curricular designs with global issues of sustainability and resiliency.
  • Discuss how to leverage existing sustainability work on campus and in the community to enhance global learning opportunities.

Global Learning Conversations are designed for faculty members, academic leaders, researchers, and international educators who are interested in student learning outcomes and designing educational experiences—curricular and cocurricular—to help students gain and practice global knowledge, skills, and perspectives.

Geoffrey ChaseGeoffrey Chase
Western Association for Schools and Colleges 

Geoff Chase, PhD, is vice president of the Western Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) of the Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC). He currently oversees a portfolio of institutions and serves as staff liaison for the WSCUC region. Prior to WASC, Chase was dean of undergraduate studies at San Diego State University (SDSU) and served as the accreditation liaison at SDSU for more than 10 years. He was instrumental in establishing SDSU’s Center for Regional Sustainability, for which he served as director. He is the coeditor of Sustainability of Campus: Stories and Strategies for Change and Sustainability in Higher Education: Stories and Strategies for Transformation. He was a founding board member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and holds a PhD in 20th-century American and British literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Joyce HamillaJoyce Hamilla

Portland State University
Joyce Hamilla is the director of international partnerships at Portland State University (PSU). Her research interests include cross-cultural cognitive science and collective security regimes. Hamilla joined PSU from the federal government where she managed partnerships for the Department of Defense. She was previously a U.S. Air Force officer and associate at the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Hamilla holds an MA from the National University of Singapore and a BA from the University of Notre Dame.

Stacey ThebodoStacey Woody Thebodo

Middlebury College
Stacey Woody Thebodo is assistant director of international programs and off-campus study at Middlebury College, where she advises students who participate in externally sponsored study abroad programs, as well as the Middlebury-Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) Oxford program. Prior to coming to Middlebury College in 1997, Thebodo worked for the School for International Training (SIT) and was a study abroad adviser at the University of Vermont. She is the author of several publications and has presented at many conferences on topics such as education abroad advising; sustainable study abroad; strategic student survey assessment; using technology in study abroad advising; blogging and reflective writing; cross-cultural reentry; and working effectively with parents. Thebodo received her BA in psychology from Central College and a master's degree in international administration with a focus on international education from SIT.

Roger-Mark De SouzaRoger-Mark De Souza
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

Roger-Mark De Souza is the director of population, environmental security, and resilience for the Wilson Center. He leads programs on climate change resilience; reproductive and maternal health; environmental security; and livelihoods, including the center’s Global Sustainability and Resilience Program; Environmental Change and Security Program; and Maternal Health Initiative. Previously, De Souza was Population Action International’s (PAI) vice president of research and director of PAI’s climate program. From 2007 to 2010, he was the director of foundation and corporate relations at the Sierra Club, and before that, he directed the Population Reference Bureau’s Population, Health, and Environment Program.
