With the rise in student interest in short-term study abroad opportunities, many universities rely on non-campus partners to provide quality, short-term programs abroad that are financially viable. It is important for both education abroad professionals and their partners to understand the roles and responsibilities that each party plays. With open understanding, both can effectively collaborate to produce enriching programs within a budgetary framework that supports all parties.

Join this live NAFSA e-Learning Seminar to discover budgetary strategies and techniques that can benefit your institution and its programs. Learn how to develop budgets and discuss appropriate financial incentives with partners. Education abroad professionals and program providers will share insights and tips on how to facilitate meaningful partnerships with one another.


After attending this NAFSA e-Learning Seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Develop budgets from both the institutional and provider perspectives;
  • Discuss techniques in creating better working relationships between provider partners, faculty, and institutions, especially in regard to program pricing;
  • Determine questions to ask faculty, program providers, and institutions to generate both quality and affordability in short-term programs.

The content of this live e-Learning Seminar will appeal to education abroad professionals at the university and secondary levels; program providers; faculty and deans interested in developing faculty- led programs; and university financial aid counselors.


Mark Lenhart
CET Academic Programs

Mark Lenhart is the executive director of CET Academic Programs. He has worked for CET since 1990, when he began as resident director of CET’s Harbin Chinese Language Program. After nearly 5 years studying and working in China, he became CET’s director in 1995. Since then, he has overseen CET’s expansion from a small provider offering two Chinese language programs to today’s much larger organization. Lenhart is a founding board member of the Fund for Education Abroad and the 2014 recipient of NAFSA’s Lily von Klemperer Award. He frequently speaks at national conferences on topics related to study abroad safety, underrepresentation, CET’s local roommates, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) student experience. As a student, Lenhart focused on Asian studies, Chinese language, and photography. He holds degrees from Bowdoin College, Harvard University, and the University of Maryland.

Sarah Langston
University of South Carolina

Sarah Langston is the associate director in the University of South Carolina’s Study Abroad Office. Within the office, she is responsible for overseeing faculty-led programs, general program development, and exchange management. Langston coordinates the university’s faculty-led program process, including the recruitment of faculty; program proposal submission and review; crisis resolution; and program evaluation. She also works with faculty leaders to establish short-term program objectives, budgets, and itineraries, and assists with program marketing and student recruitment. Langston also serves as the Advocacy and Regulatory Content Coordinator on NAFSA’s Education Abroad Knowledge Community’s national team.

Mandy Reinig
St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Mandy Reinig is the director of international education at St. Mary's College of Maryland. She works with both incoming and outgoing students as well as faculty-led short-term programs. Additionally, she serves as the principal designated school official (PDSO) and the responsible officer (RO) for the college and has been instrumental in bringing the institution in line with best practices, especially regarding budgetary and health and safety practices. One of her primary responsibilities includes working with faculty to develop and implement short-term programs around the world. Reinig is also the founder of Mandy's Mashups, which works to educate international education professionals on social media topics and trends.
