Richard HaassDr. Richard N. Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, was the NAFSA Worldview guest on a live webcast offered free of charge to international educators and friends of our community. The topic of the NAFSA Worldview was “Knowledge, Power, and Populism: Universities in a Changing International Order." Dr. Haass, the author of A World in Disarray: American Foreign Policy and the Crisis of the Old Order, analyzes current tensions. International education, including the exchange of students and scholars, is part of building a sense of shared interests in our modern world order. Yet that order is under stress. In many countries, we see the erosion of respect for fact-based decision-making and expertise in public discourse. Authoritarians attack scholars who defend norms beyond the expedient. Dr. Haass addresses the implications of an erosion of world order for colleges and universities and the exchange of scholars and students. “How might international political turbulence affect international education?”
