Explore issues related to international partnerships and cooperation with Latin America. Latin American higher education leaders share innovative practices in the region and provide insight on how to develop sustainable and successful internationalization strategies and partnerships.

Keynote Speaker

Charles Walker
Director Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, University of California, Davis, USA
Chuck Walker is the MacArthur Foundation Endowed Chair in International Human Rights and Professor of History. He is also the director of the Hemispheric Institute on the Americas. He has lived in Peru for more than a decade and also lived in Argentina and Spain. His research focuses on Peruvian history, and he has written several books including books The Tupac Amaru Rebellion, Shaky Colonialism: Lima and the Long Aftermath of the 1746 Earthquake-Tsunami, and Smoldering Ashes: Cusco and the Creation of Republican Peru. All three have been translated into Spanish. As director of HIA, Walker works to develop close relationships with Latin American universities. Not only does UCD count on hundreds of graduate students from Latin America but HIA oversees short-term faculty exchanges with the Catholic University of Peru; Diego Portales University in Chile and the Catholic University of Chile.

Thomas Buntru
Director of International Programs, University of Monterrey, Mexico

Thomas Buntru is Dean of International Programs at Universidad de Monterrey. His responsibilities include education abroad programming, cooperation agreements, strategic planning, and internationalization of the curriculum. Currently UDEM is the Mexican university with the highest student participation rate in study abroad. His strategic plan for the internationalization of UDEM received the 2009 Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education from the Institute of International Education. He has been an active member of the Mexican Association for International Education since 1997 and served as its president from 2009 to 2011. In 2015 he was the recipient of the annual AMPEI Award.

Arturo Condo
President, EARTH University, Costa Rica
Ecuadorian by birth, Latin American by heart, Dr. Arturo Condo is the president of EARTH University, an innovative global university educating leaders for sustainable development, especially for rural areas of the world. He served as president of INCAE Business School between 2007 and 2015. Prior to that, he was dean of the MBA, dean of Innovation and Development and director of the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) at INCAE. He has a doctorate degree from Harvard Business School in business strategy and competitiveness and was recognized as a “Distinguished Scholar” in his MBA at INCAE. He also serves as senior institute associate of Harvard’s Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness, a think-tank led by professor Michael Porter.

Mariella Olivos, PhD
Associate Director Undergraduate Programs, University ESAN, Peru
Mariella Olivos is associate director of undergraduate programs at Universidad ESAN, a private not-for-profit University in Lima, Peru. In addition to managing the internationalization of the bachelor programs, she is assistant professor in the School of Economics and Management. She is also executive coordinator at CLADEA (the Latin American Council of Management Schools) the network for the development of management education in the Latin American region that joins more than 200 international institutions and business school. She is also a representative of ESAN in the board of NIBES (Network of International Business Schools) and site on the board of EQUAL (Education Quality Link) representing CLADEA. She earned her PhD from Tilburg University in the Netherlands, holds an MBA from University du Quebec at Montreal, Canada, a MSc in economics from Universidad Nacional Agraria la Molina in Peru (UNAM), and a bachelor's degree in economics from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, (PUCP).

Marcela Wolff
Head of International Relations Universidad EAFIT , Colombia
Mrs. Wolff has worked at EAFIT since July, 2009. Since August 2016, she is the executive director of Colombia Challenge Your Knowledge – CCYK, a network of 26 accredited universities in Colombia and supported by several government and private entities, with the objective of promoting Colombia worldwide as a high quality academic destination. She led EAFIT’s capacity building project that received the first grants for Latin America of President Obama’s 100,000 Strong in the Americas Program. She was previously responsible of EAFIT’s international projects in the Continuing Education Center (2008-2009) and she was a part-time lecturer on international aid in the School of Business (2005-2009). She received her MBA degree from Universidad EAFIT in 2008, her graduate certificate in international business from the same university in 2003, and her architecture bachelor’s degree from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in 1999.
