Cross-Cultural Preparation for Medical Students Participating in International Service Opportunities

Medical students selected to participate in summer placement in international sites attended a weekend preparatory retreat during the spring prior to their placement.

They learned general and site-specific information from faculty and peer mentors and participated in a ropes course to facilitate group interaction and appreciation for diversity. Evaluation demonstrated the value of this program to increase knowledge and to enhance feelings of competence.
