Workshop on Cross-Cultural Issues Encountered During International Health Electives
The International Offices from the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of Nebraska Medical Center-Omaha held a collaborative one-day workshop to prepare medical students for clinical and nonclinical international health electives.Through lectures and interactive and experiential learning activities, the workshop sensitized students to diversity and enhanced intercultural communication. Interactive events included a Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory and small group discussions centered around cultural vignettes in clinical settings.
Keynote speakers discussed Health Advice for International Travel, Cultural Competence in Healthcare, and Opportunities in International Health: A Physician's Personal Experiences.
