The Muslim Mosaic: Understanding Our Neighbors, Understanding Our World

The Muslim Mosaic project's goal was to increase understanding about Muslim and Islam among those on the Ramapo College community.

Ramapo College students, faculty, staff, Muslim students from a nearby school, and members of the community participated in the yearlong series of events. The aim was to bring peoples from diverse backgrounds together for meaningful interactions to change previously held convictions, and foster greater respect and appreciation.

The Muslim Mosaic program included five components:
  • A two-day Teach-In
  • Two series of "Dialogues" each semester
  • A visit to a Muslim-related cultural event in New York City
  • A film screening and discussion
  • A culminating conference

These events allowed all members of the Ramapo community to become involved in meaningful interactions in order to learn more about the Muslim world and about each other.

By interacting with scholars and religious leaders, by sharing cultural events and meals, and by engaging in guided discussions, the goal was to raise awareness between cultures, and foster positive relationships among citizens of New Jersey and the world.
