Hawaii Behind the Picture Postcard

Through experiential and service learning, this project attempted to help students develop an understanding of and sensitivity to contemporary, grassroots issues in Hawaiian communities, and to provide international students with opportunities to learn about historical, environmental, social, and political aspects of island life.

Emphasis was placed on exposing students to Native Hawaiian (host culture) issues and helping them undertand how today's issues are tied to historical legacies.

Activities exposed students to the richness of "local culture," a blend of host, Asian, and U.S. culture. Students visited different communities and participated in several service activities. Several of the program activities included "local" students and all allowed them to interact with knowledgeable Hawaii residents.
