Southern History and Culture Exploration Program (SHCEP)

To deepen international students' and visiting international scholars' understanding of and participation in the life of the region, the Southern History and Culture Exploration Program (SHCEP) provided lectures, interactions with various populations, and tours.

The program helped participants look behind simplistic stereotypes of the South, to consider the region's complex cultures, development, and human relations. Through a series of trips to various locations in North Carolina and associated lectures designed to add both historical and cultural context to these outings, the SHCEP Program offered the University of North Carolina's (Chapel Hill) international students an important and detailed exposure to North Carolina and the South.

From the mountains of Appalachia to the Atlantic seacoast, participants sampled a wide range of North Carolina history and culture that in certain terms reflects that of other great Southern states.
