Get Global: Encouraging Minority Students to Study Abroad

A workshop for University of Tennessee faculty and staff was developed to raise awareness of the need and importance of increasing the number of minority students studying abroad, to train staff on issues and concerns of minority students, particularly black students, and to provide training on how to increase representation in campus study abroad programs.

Objectives

  • Develop an awareness of the need to make a special effort to recruit minority students, particularly black students, in study abroad programs.
  • Identify obstacles that may keep minority students from studying abroad.
  • Provide information to those who advise these students on their special issues and concerns, as well as information about the cultures from which these students come.
  • Suggest some processes that can be used to ensure that students of color are advised about the importance of study abroad, opportunities available, and financial resources for overseas study.

Participating Institution

  • The University of Tennessee (multiple departments)
