China Earthquake Relief
The major earthquake that struck southwestern China's Sichuan Province on May 12 has taken a heavy toll, as thousands of people have died and thousands more are injured, missing, or homeless. Measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, the massive temblor and the following aftershocks have caused widespread devastation, destroying or damaging numerous buildings and burying 900 students under the debris of their collapsed school. Adding to the hardship of the survivors is the contamination of the water supply in the city of Chengdu and other areas. Undoubtedly, it will take some time for the region to overcome this terrible tragedy. On behalf of NAFSA China SIG and American International Education Foundation (AIEF), I urge you to do what you can to support the earthquake relief efforts in China. The Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC, has suggested that donations be made to the Red Cross Society of China. In the USA, donations can be made to the American Red Cross.
