Tribute to Norma McCaig - Our Beloved Founder of Global Nomads International

Global Nomad Advocate Norma McCaig has Died

Norma McCaig, Founder of Global Nomads International (GNI), passed quietly away on Monday night November 10th, 2008 at her home in Reston, Virginia. She died of complications from cancer.

Norma was a long time supporter of NAFSA and worked tirelessly on behalf of those people who were raised outside their passport countries as a result of their parents occupation. Such experiences often resulted in a shared a special bond among such groups and often resulted in their possessing unusual skills as interculturalists. In 1984, Norma McCaig, herself a TCK whose favorite memories were of her childhood in India, coined the term 'global nomad.' to describe these internationalists. They are also known as "third culture kids (TCKs)" She worked for many decades on behalf of helping Global Nomads to be aware of their unique background and to appreciate the psychological and social legacy such an upbringing provided. She gave many workshops and sessions on Global Nomads at both the national and regional NASFA conferences. Norma was also a founder of and very active in the Global Nomad SIG. She never passed up an opportunity to raise awareness among Third Culture Kids about their common heritage and to promote understanding among others, especially educators, about why Global Nomads were particularly adapted to be culture bridges and work effectively in cross-cultural settings. The Global Nomad community was her extended family and the Global Nomads world-wide have just lost their most passionate, charming and devoted advocate.

If you wish to make a memorial contribution, please make it to the Cancer Foundation in her name (Cancer Foundation: http://www.cancer.org/). Norma's address for condolences is:

1559 SCANDIA CIR.
RESTON, VA 20190

In the meantime, Charlie Stevenson, global nomad and dear friend of Norma, has kindly set up an e-mail group on Yahoo groups to help the family, friends and peers of Norma reach each other quickly. It's called "Gnorma," and you can access it at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gnorma/

It's an open group - that is, anyone at all can post to it or see the message archives without joining (but you'll need to join if you wish to receive messages automatically). The group takes attachments, such as photos, so please feel free to share them. The group is moderated, and the membership rolls are protected for your privacy and security. Another purpose of this group is to share descriptions of and links to any GN-related organizations or activities that you may have, including other lists. Please feel free to share this Norma group with those who knew and cherished her.

Please join us in creating an online tribute to Norma McCaig, our beloved founder of Global Nomads International. Feel free to share your favorite "Norma" stories, pictures and thoughts/feelings.

May Norma's spirit be at peace, her energy shine bright within our hearts, and her legacy continue on in our minds….
