Japan Specific Interest Group
Review of Japan SIG Annual Meeting
The Japan SIG celebrated its 20th anniversary at this year's annual conference. Opening the meeting, NAFSA’s Marlene Johnson congratulated the SIG as being the oldest specific interest group within NAFSA and encouraged all present to continue working hard to support international educational exchange efforts with Japan. In celebration of the SIG's anniversary meeting, co-chairs Anthony Ogden of Penn State University and Natsumi Onaka of Iwate University unveiled a new Japan SIG logo and brochure (sponsored by Step Eiken). The co-chairs reviewed the progress of the SIG in 2007-2008 and presented a recent snapshot of student flows to/from Japan. The meeting featured a panel presentation entitled, “Shaping the Future of International Educational Exchange with Japan”. The SIG is very grateful to the panelists, which included Gary DeCoker of Earlham College, Rob Malicki of the Australian Institute for Mobility Overseas, and Sadayoshi Takagawa of JASSO. The 2008 meeting concluded with a brief discussion of the action plan for the forthcoming academic year.
