Call for Nominations – Global Citizen Diplomacy

Loading...

November 16-19, 2010 - Washington, DC

Global Citizen Diplomacy

The Higher Education Task Force of the U.S. Summit & Initiative on Global Citizen Diplomacy, co-chaired by NAFSA Executive Director and CEO Marlene M. Johnson and Community Colleges for International Development President and Executive Director John Halder, is seeking nominations from U.S. institutions of higher education about innovative, sustainable, and replicable programs or projects focused on engaging students, faculty, and/or staff in an international activity at home or abroad.

Through international education and exchange, higher education provides a critical infrastructure for supporting the creation of a globally competent and tolerant society. NAFSA is engaged with the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy in demonstrating these important contributions from higher education toward increasing the number of U.S. Americans engaged with the world.

At the Summit

Ten exemplary programs in each of twelve sectors (120 total) will be selected to be presented at the U.S. Summit for Global Citizen Diplomacy in Washington, D.C. Descriptions of the program will also be included in a portfolio for each sector, and made available at the Summit for all funding and other agencies and organizations in attendance.

The 2010 summit will focus on activities, programs, and projects that address one or more Global Challenges:

  • Preserving the Environment
  • Reducing Poverty and Disease
  • Increasing Respect for Human Rights
  • Creating a Globally Competent Society
  • Encouraging Cultural Engagement
  • Achieving Food Security
  • Securing U.S. and Global Financial Security

Selection Considerations

Exemplary activities, programs, or projects related to higher education:

  • Allow participants to address one or more of the listed Global Challenges.
  • Demonstrate partnerships with one or more institutions or organizations in the United States or abroad.
  • Include commitment from an international partner(s) when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate that by leveraging potential resources – personnel and management – the program significantly expands the number of citizen diplomats involved in an international activity whether in the United States, abroad, or both.
  • Are clear about the track record of success and how additional funding will allow the activity, program, or project to be brought to scale to expand the impact to a wider group of students, faculty, and/or staff.
  • Demonstrate clear person-to-person interaction and impact.

The Higher Education Task Force welcomes self-nominations from all institutional types; nominations from community colleges and minority-serving institutions are especially of interest. Nominations that highlight study abroad, international students, collaborative research, or community outreach will be given priority. The review committee will select a cross-section of exciting, innovative, replicable, scalable activities, programs, and projects.

Benefits of Nominating

Activities, programs, and projects presented at the summit will receive raised visibility with the U.S. administration and funders, as well as receive national and international recognition and increased credibility with colleagues around the world. In addition to those from the Higher Education sector, initiatives from eleven other sectors will be presented at the summit: Business, Community-based Organizations, Development Assistance, Faith-based Organizations, Global Health, International Cultural Engagement, International Voluntary Service, K-12 Education, Sports, Travel & Tourism, and Youth Service.

Proposals are voluntary contributions to The Higher Education Task Force; submitting individuals and institutions will not receive an honorarium or expense reimbursement. U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy will assume copyright for nominations and program descriptions and is therefore authorized to publish accepted nominations.
