Catholic University The Catholic University of America is unique as the national university of the Catholic Church, founded in 1887 by the U.S. bishops. Howard University As the only truly comprehensive American university with a predominantly black constituency and a diverse student population, Howard University is one of the major engineers of progress and change in our society. Since it’s founding in 1867 by Major General Oliver Otis Howard, a Civil War hero and commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau, Howard has awarded more than 100,000 diplomas in the professions, the arts, the sciences and the humanities.
