2008 Conference Symposium Biographies

Diana Bartelli Carlin

Dr. Carlin served as dean of the Graduate School and International Programs at the University of Kansas from 2000-2007. In that position she oversaw all graduate programs on four campuses, the offices of study abroad, international student and scholar services, and the Office of International Programs. Currently on leave, she is Dean-in Residence at the Council of Graduate Schools, and chair of NAFSA’s Bologna Task Force, and has presented programs on the impact of Bologna on U.S. higher education at both NAFSA and CGS meetings.


Jane Edwards

Prior to taking up the new position of Associate Dean for International Affairs at Yale in August 2006, Jane Edwards served for three years as Director of International Studies at Harvard, where she initiated an ambitious program of international experience for undergraduates. Before this she served in a similar position at Wesleyan University, where she also ran a program in the less commonly taught languages, and taught for the department of Romance Languages. She has holds a B.A and an M.A from Cambridge University, and came to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Co-author with Humphrey Tonkin of “The World in the Curriculum” she publishes and presents on a wide range of topics in international education. She has held national office in several professional organizations in international education, and currently serves on the Board of World Learning, and chaired the Council on International Education’s Academic Consortium Board. She is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Studies in International Education. She has taught throughout her career, primarily in Latin American Studies, gender studies, and cultural anthropology.


David Larsen

David Larsen has led the Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad since 1988. Prior to joining Arcadia, he served as Executive Director of the Fulbright Foundation in Greece, directed an administrative division of IIE in New York, and was responsible for the operations at the Center for International Education at the University of Tennessee. He has taught at public and private institutions in this country and abroad. David was co-chair and then chair of SECUSSA's committee for Health and Safety in Education Abroad from 1998 until 2003; he continues to participate in health, safety and security discussions and works actively with ACE on campus internationalization. Dr. Larsen joined NAFSA in 1974, and has served on its Board of Directors. Additionally, he chairs the Management Committee of the Alliance for Global Education. Over the years he has served on the boards of directors of AIPT, CIEE, the Fulbright Association, the Fulbright Center, the Pennsylvania Council on International Education, and the Forum on Education Abroad. David has served on the National Nominating Panel for NSEP and on the National Review Panel for the Gilman Scholarship program. As an officer of the University, he serves on Arcadia University's Executive Council and is a member of the Planning Council.

Dr. Larsen earned his AB in economics from Colby College, his Master's in English from the University of Maine and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the Union Graduate School.


David Maxwell

David Maxwell has been president of Drake University since May of 1999. He was director of the National Foreign Language Center in Washington DC from 1993 to 1999, after serving as president of Whitman College from 1989 to 1993. Dr. Maxwell was at Tufts University from 1971 to 1989 as a faculty member in Russian language and literature, and served as Dean of Undergraduate Studies for 8 years.

Dr. Maxwell earned his bachelor’s degree in Russian area studies from Grinnell College. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees in Slavic languages and literatures from Brown University.

At Brown, Dr. Maxwell was a Brown University Fellow and subsequently a National Defense Education Act Fellow. He was a Fulbright Fellow, and at Tufts received the Lillian Leibner Award for distinguished teaching and advising. At Tufts he also twice received the Senior Class Citation for Distinguished Service. In 1991 the Brown University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences gave him the Distinguished Alumnus Citation.

Currently, President Maxwell serves on the Community Board of the Wells Fargo Bank, Iowa and is member of the Greater Des Moines Committee. He is a past member of the board of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, past President of the Des Moines Higher Education Collaborative, past chair of the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges & Universities, and of the Missouri Valley Conference. Nationally, Dr. Maxwell is a member of the Executive Committee of the Business/Higher Education Forum, the Board of Trustees of the Council on Economic Development, and the editorial board of Peer Review. He is an Education Associate of the Conference Board.


JoAnn McCarthy

Dr. JoAnn McCarthy is a consultant in international education and the former Assistant Provost for International Affairs at the University of Pennsylvania. She is past chair of NAFSA’s International Education Leadership Knowledge Community and chair of the recent Task Force on Internationalization. A past president of the Association of International Education Administrators, Dr. McCarthy has also served on various international boards and advisory groups, including the American Council on Education’s International Commission; the Group of Advisors of the Department of Defense National Security Education Program; and the Department of Education Title VI Task Force on the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (Foreign Languages and International Studies). She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Council on International Educational Exchange, and is a frequent consultant, author, and speaker on the internationalization of higher education, the changing dynamics of student and faculty mobility, and the emerging role of the research university in global civil society.


Richard McGourty

Richard F. McGourty has worked as a consulting psychologist since 1982. His work embraces a range of activities – organizational change efforts, strategic planning and management development. Also, owing to his training in clinical psychology, Dr. McGourty is often called upon to assist organizations with work place problems made more challenging by the need to handle difficult people and people in crisis. Dr. McGourty’s work has brought him into contact with a rich variety of organizations, both for profit and not-for-profit, in the United States and in England.

Dr. McGourty has enjoyed his association with NAFSA over the years. In 2007 he served as a facilitator with the NAFSA Task Force on Study Abroad and coordinated the ISSS KC strategic planning retreat. He has worked for several years with a team of NAFSAns to design and deliver the Management Development Program.

Dr. McGourty received his doctorate from Loyola University of Chicago and completed his clinical internship at Hines Veteran’s Hospital. Dr. McGourty has paralleled his consulting work with teaching at the university level. He has taught Masters-level students in Loyola University's Center for Organization Development. He has also served as an Honorary Visiting Fellow to The Centre for Management and Leadership at the University of York (England).

In recent years Dr. McGourty has worked with Dr. Ira Chasnoff (www.ntiupstream.com) to help counties and states respond to prenatal drug exposure and the special needs of high risk children. They have published Power Beyond Measure which describes a prevention and early intervention approach for these problems. He was the first Chairman of the Board for the Children’s Research Triangle.


Jennifer Lund

Conference Symposium Chair
Jennifer A. Lund has served as the Director of the Office of International Education at the Agnes Scott College (ASC) since December of 2000. From 1996 – 2000 she served as the Special Projects Coordinator for International Education at the Board of Regents, University System of Georgia (USG), where she created and implemented a system-wide study abroad scholarship program; obtained approval for a J-1 Exchange Visitor program for the system as a consortium of 34 schools from the US Department of State; annually coordinated 4 multi-disciplinary, international professional development opportunities for system faculty, and chaired several policy initiatives. Prior to the USG she served eight years as the Director of International Services at Georgia State University and two years as Assistant Director at the University of Florida.

Her leadership in NAFSA: Association of International Educators includes chairing Georgia’s state association; chairing NAFSA Region VII; serving nationally as the Regional Coordinator, working with the chairs of all eleven regions and currently serving as the Programming Subcommittee Chair for the International Education Leadership (IEL) Knowledge Community, which included coordinating today’s symposium.

In fall of 2001, Dr. Lund was selected by her peers in Region VII for “The International Excellence” award. She has received two Fulbright Awards; served on numerous Fulbright Review Committees and other boards; and has been a cross-cultural communications trainer in the educational and corporate arena for thirty years.


Susan Lambert

Conference Symposium Planning Committee
Susan Lambert is the founding Director of Intercultural Outreach Programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She contributes to UNC Charlotte’s outreach and internationalization efforts through development, implementation, and oversight of a broad range of innovative international programs and special projects including language and cultural programs and custom-designed professional development. She has been actively involved in NAFSA since the early 90’s when she served as Editor of NAFSA’s first Electronic Newsletter. Currently, she is serving NAFSA’s International Education Leaders Knowledge Community as a member of the Leadership Team and Training Coordinator. She is also a member of NAFSA’s Training Coordination Sub-committee. She has collaborated with three other IEL members to conduct a Delphi study to determine the skills and knowledge areas needed for success as a chief international education officer. She is working with the committee to use the results to plan appropriate professional development opportunities for international education leaders.
