Funding for Education Abroad

Audience: Mid-level professionals with financial aid/budgeting responsibilities.

International educators often have financial responsibilities, but few have specific training in financial management or fund raising. This workshop addresses financial issues of practical use in running study abroad programs and managing an office. Topics covered include:
  • Advising students on budgeting
  • Working with financial aid
  • Managing an office budget
  • Working with an institution for funding support
  • Advocacy with government and nongovernmental funding sources
  • Grant writing
Important ethical considerations are involved when working with money and different funding sources will also be discussed.

Workshop Objectives
  • Learn the types of financial assistance and funding sources available for education abroad and the education abroad office’s responsibilities for compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Learn basic strategies for setting up a study abroad office budget sufficient to accomplish established goals of the unit
  • Develop strategies for effective networking on campus to achieve financial goals and strategies for advocacy at the local, state, and federal level
  • Develop skills for seeking and applying for outside sources of funding for operations and for student scholarships
