Portfolio and Operational Models of Institutional Study Abroad Programming

This resource presents two complementary ways for an institution to assess program needs and decide among the various program models available while developing a full range of offerings for students.

The Portfolio Model presents a matrix of factors involved in choosing among the basic models of programs—linked to goals, cost to students and institutions, and numbers to be served.

The Operational Model offers another matrix of the factors involved in actually running the various types of programs. Both models present the basic choices in program design, which should be made each time we commit our intuitions, office, and faculty or staff to a new program.
