Facts & Figures: Health, Safety, and Crisis Response

Reliable information on the details of health and safety factors in locations around the globe is critical to making decisions on where students are sent and how students and faculty are best prepared and supported abroad. The following Web sites provide a variety of perspectives and access.


SAFETI Clearinghouse
This familiar website contains information for advisers, students, and families, including a downloadable Personal Emergency Action Plan.

Mobility International USA
This Web site has a variety of useful information including a publication on rights and responsibilities under international disabilities related laws.

U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs
In addition to Travel Warnings, the Department of State informs travelers of conditions abroad that may affect their safety and security through different consular information documents.

Overseas Security Advisory Council
(OSAC)
In addition to daily global security news, OSAC offers a variety of crime and safety reports, as well as messages issued from an Embassy to U.S. citizens regarding local security situations. Other links include the Overseas Posts page that offers country specific information on the U.S. embassy, consulate, or institute in that country.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
In addition to information on health concerns of all types, the page titled Illness and Injury Abroad within the Travelers' Health section has valuable guidelines for travel planning. It also provides some information on the frequency of injuries (including motor vehicle and pedestrian injuries) abroad.

World Health Organization
The WHO has information on infectious diseases and a section on risks for travelers. It includes information on health risks, vaccination requirements, and malaria by country.

Association for Safe International Road Travel
(ASIRT)
The ASIRT Web site provides good advice on road travel.  Road Travel Reports containing specific information on hazardous roads in specific countries are available for a fee.
