Methods, Systems, and Suggestions: Funding Education Abroad
While many campus advisers are familiar with the use of federal and state aid toward study abroad, there is often still a financial gap for students after that aid is applied. There are a host of scholarships and grants for studying abroad, and a number of these resources are listed below. The key to successful searching is to start early, as many of the scholarship programs require lead time for application. There is also a campus component of aiding or advising students on successful applications, resources, and strategies. There are a host of scholarships for studying abroad.
Another useful publication for those searching for student funding for education abroad is A Student’s Guide to Scholarships, Grants and Funding Sources in International Education and Other Disciplines from the International Studies and Programs office at Michigan State university.
IIE administers a number of scholarship programs, including:
National Security Education Program (NSEP)
Funding for study in areas and languages important to the future security of the United States.
NSEP Boren Graduate Fellowships
Graduate study in those languages and cultures critical to U.S. interests.
National Flagship Language Program
Administered through IIE, this program is intended to encourage the development of specialists in languages critical to U.S. security interests.
Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship Program
To encourage participation in education abroad programs by those students who have been traditionally underrepresented.
Freeman Awards
To encourage a better understanding of Asia.
Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program
For biomedical engineering study and/or research.
Rotary International sponsors a variety of funding programs for study and teaching abroad as a part of its goal to foster international understanding and cooperation.
