International Alumni Programs: The University of Oregon

The University of Oregon has had an international alumni program for 30 years, surviving its beginnings through the dedication of staff and volunteers in the Office of International Programs and the UO Alumni Association. Staff updated records, established an annual newsletter, and kept in touch with alumni who had returned to their home countries. Recognizing the value of their international alumni, a much greater interest has been given to maintaining relations with overseas alums in the last decade.

In 1996, a one-third-time director of international alumni relations was appointed. An annual newsletter is published in cooperation with the Alumni Association and sent out to the members. An International Alumni Relations Committee was appointed in 2002 to “review, promote and lend assistance to the international alumni activities at the University of Oregon”. As a result of this committee’s work, and with the strong support of the UO president and vice presidents, funding for 1.5 staff positions and a stable budget for international alumni relations was put in place starting July, 2003.

The International Insider is Oregon’s publication for international alumni. A joint effort with the Alumni Association, the International Insider is the successor to World Link which began publication in 1972. The Insider averages 6 – 8 pages in length and is sent annually to 12,000 alums.

In Fall 2003, the University of Oregon will host a 20th Anniversary Reunion of international students who participated in the UO’s International Cultural Service Program. A model for other institutions, this program provides tuition scholarships to international students who engage in community service projects designed to share their culture with the local community. Approximately 700 students have participated in the ICSP over the years.

The UO has established international chapters in 13 countries, with the most active in East Asia. Japan has three chapters with more than 1500 alums. Chapter events include receptions, fund raising and student recruitment. Activities are coordinated with the travel schedules of the university president and other staff members. In 2003, presidential receptions have been held in Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The continuing success of the outreach efforts on behalf of international alumni have resulted in an annual operating budget of approximately $100,000.
