Advocacy Resources

Advocacy, whether at the federal, state, local, or campus level, involves a skill set that can always be honed and improved. The tools below will help you learn the basics about advocacy work as well as provide guidance for those who have been engaged in advocacy for years.

Advocacy Handbook

This handbook is intended to guide international educators in their advocacy activities both on Capitol Hill and on campus. It includes advice on how to write effective correspondence, conduct meetings, and build relationships in order to promote international education.

State Whip Network

The State Whip Network mobilizes NAFSA members on behalf of our efforts to raise public awareness of international education and exchange. The whips represent a small group of NAFSA members residing in key congressional districts who are responsible for maintaining relationships with their members of Congress and activating their fellow NAFSA members to participate in advocacy campaigns. Watch for messages from your State Whip to stay involved with state issues.

Contact NAFSA staff to find out more about being involved in this important effort.

Working with the News Media: A Different Kind of Advocacy

This handbook for grassroots press advocates created by NAFSA’s press office, is designed to offer information, tips, and tools for working with the news media for individuals whose primary work does not typically include media relations.
