How to Prepare for Contact from U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement
Since September 11, 2001, law enforcement officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are more frequently visiting students and schools in search of information on students they are investigating or have in custody. With the advent of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), new regulations waive the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) rights of students in some specific instances. This resource will help members prepare for such visits and better understand how to respond, and how to determine what student information can be released.
