- The role and responsibilities of the ISA
- Ethical considerations
- Dealing with crises
- Orientation and programming
- Intercultural communication
- Advising and counseling
- Advocacy
- Utilizing resources

- Conceptual framework for foreign student advising and understanding of the fundamental issues advisers face in the day-to-day balancing of pressures that fall upon them
- Knowledge of orientation and crisis management
