Knowledge Community Update
Third Quarter 2007
NAFSA's Knowledge Communities have grown tremendously during the past 3 months. The Education Abroad Knowledge Community was reorganized into 4 new networks, resources were created and updated across the Knowledge Communities, and each network continued to gain subscriptions.Education Abroad
- Developed Moving Ahead, a three-year plan with 5 special initiatives and 2 priority focus areas to help guide their work.
- Launched three new professional networks to assist visitors in finding the resources they need more quickly:
- Launched a new special focus network - with input from NAFSA's Public Policy department - to help U.S. campuses prepare for increasing demand for study abroad as well as assist them in understanding the Simon Study Abroad Act.
- E-Publication By Example: Resources for Education Abroad Offices and Advisers was updated with additional information.
- Toolkit for the Small Education Abroad Office - new 4 hour CEP workshop created to offer at regional conferences will debut at two conferences this fall.
International Education Leadership
- Collegial Conversations, short articles on selected CIEO's views of the field, have been published monthly during the academic year. September's conversations featured John Greisberger and Riall Nolan.
- New practice resource category added to the CIEL Network, Funding Resources and Issues which provides links to funding sources such as the Fulbright Programs, FIPSE and PIRE.
International Student & Scholar Services
- Developed 3-5 year strategic plan with 6 special initiatives during leadership retreat in Colorado
- 2 Collegial Conversations: Tips for Writing a Successful Session Proposal for NAFSA's 2008 Annual Conference, OPT
- New and Updated Practice Resources: Identifying an Immigration Attorney, Internet Resources for Community Programming
- Webinar Got I.T.? Advancing Technology in ISSS, featured three ISSS offices.
- New chair for 2008: Janice Bogen will assume the slot vacated by Hanya Redwan.
Recruitment, Admissions and Preparation
- New and Updated Practice Resources: Health Insurance Companies, Graduate Study in the U.S.
Teaching, Learning and Scholarship
- Updated their resource on Research-Based Publications on International Education
- Updated the IaH: Overview & Background practice resource
- Jointly charged a task force to update the very popular Intercultural Activity Toolkit
KCCC Task Forces
- Under the auspices of the Bologna Task Force, issued The Bologna Process: An Opportunity for International
Cooperation
, as a supplement to the September/October International Educator magazine. It is on the Web site as a free e-Publication at www.nafsa.org/bolognasupplement. Copies will be available at each regional conference and will be distributed in December annual conference of the Council of Graduate Schools. - Members of the Bologna Task Force are presenting the session "Developing a Policy Response to the Bologna Process" at each regional conference. The presentation with notes will be available in the Document Library on the Bologna Process Special Focus Network.
