Strategic Planning and Team Building in Intensive English Programs

Audience: Experienced English language Program Administrators with at least two years experience

This four-hour workshop is for experienced professional language education administrators with responsibilities for designing and implementing strategic planning or large-scale innovations in their programs. It is also for ESL and EFLS administrators who wish to take more active general international education leadership roles in their campus systems or in NAFSA. Recognizing that effective strategic planning cannot exist without appropriate personnel development, this workshop will provide participants with an introduction to and understanding of strategic planning tools and team building processes. Participants will begin a first draft of three aspects of a strategic plan for their program: a business definition, long-term outcome, and SMART goals.

Workshop Objectives
  • Recognize the fundamental components involved in strategic planning
  • Develop a mission statement based on a business definition
  • Develop a draft of two or three Long Term Outcomes for review by the home institution
  • Understand several key concepts and strategies for building strong teams
  • Identify the advantages of team decisionmaking on strategic planning efforts
