Mission Statements

Listed below are the mission statements of current ASG organization members.


American Association of IEPs (AAIEP)

The object of this association shall be to promote ethical and professional standards for intensive English language programs; to encourage and facilitate evaluation of intensive English programs; to provide liaison between intensive English programs and organizations which use their services and those whose actions affect them, including but not limited to U.S. and foreign government agencies, sponsors, admission officers and counselors; and to increase awareness abroad of opportunities for English language study in the United States.


Administrators and Teachers of ESL:  a Former Section of NAFSA (ATESL)

  • To assist in defining ESL/EFL (TESL/TEFL) standards in areas such as determining language proficiency, establishing clear outcomes for ESL instruction, and providing instruction in a variety of language skills.
  • To identify models of best practice in IEP administration and support them through programming and advocacy, and to identify and act on emerging issues in IEP administration.
  • To maintain communication with other professional associations in the field and encourage and facilitate mutually beneficial programs and activities. To serve as advocates for the role of English language teaching and learning in internationalizing the curriculum in U.S. universities and colleges.


Teachers of English of Speakers of Other Languages IEP IS (IEP Interest Section) (TESOL)

IEP IES exists to provide language instruction for those, who, for whatever purpose, need or desire to acquire English in a relatively brief but intense period.

TESOL's Intensive English Programs Interest Section exists to serve the needs of those who work in IEP's. The concerns of the membership may include methodology, curriculum design, materials development, placement, evaluation, program administration, technology-assisted instruction, English for specific purposes, culture, learners' concerns , and members' employment concerns.

While most IEP IE members are associated with IEPS in academic preparatory programs, the membership includes professionals involved in all types of intensive English instruction.



PAIS (Program Administration Interest Section) (PAIS)

PA IS is committed to the support and development of professional and ethical program administration by administrators and teachers in English Language Programs regardless of type, setting, geographical location, or size. Program administration refers to every aspect of a program's development, operation, and management.



University and College IEPs (UCIEP)

University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP), founded in 1967, is a consortium of intensive English programs that are governed by universities and colleges in the United States. The mission of UCIEP is to promote excellence in intensive English program administration, curriculum, and instruction by: (1) establishing guidelines for member programs, (2) encouraging and sponsoring professional development as well as cooperation and communication among member programs, and (3) advocating on behalf of member programs, the organization, and the field of English as a second language.
