Revisiting Effective Reentry Programs for Returnees from U.S. Academic Programs
The purpose of this Academy for Educational Development (AED) Leadership and Institutional Development (LID) Occasional Paper (1.1mb
) is to explore how we currently understand the reentry process for particular groups of sojourners, and to offer useful suggestions for comprehensive reentry program design.
While considerable work has been done to understand and prepare sojourners for the culture shock they may undergo when transitioning to life overseas, the reentry experience, which is easily as unsettling, is often overlooked or ignored. The experience of reentry to the home culture after several years abroad is a complex and often confounding one, and although most returnees are confronted with many of the same challenges, the overall process of coming to terms with reentry appears to be highly individualized. By comprehending what returning sojourners experience, better programs can be designed to facilitate a smoother reentry process.
