International Education Research Grants
NAFSA Region X Research Grants
Region X has allocated funds for several research grants per year to promote research in international education. Grantees must commit to presenting their findings at the NAFSA Region X Regional Conference following completion of their project. The maximum Research Grant award will be $500. The award provides up to $250 for research project expenses and up to $250 for conference expenses. Students as well as more experienced professionals are encouraged to apply.
International Education Research Foundation, Sepmeyer Research Grant Program
The purpose of the Sepmeyer Research Grant Program is to conduct research and disseminate information on world educational systems and to facilitate the integration of individuals educated outside the United States into the U.S. educational environment and work force.
The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Research Support Grant
Up to five thousand dollars ($5,000) may be granted to support a single-year proposal. Multiple-year awards may also be granted. Practicing professionals (administrators and faculty) as well as graduate students seeking support for dissertation research are eligible. NACADA membership, while always encouraged, is not required.
IELTS Grants and Awards
The IELTS Joint-Funded Research Program is available for educational institutions and suitably qualified individuals are invited to apply for funding to undertake applied research projects in relation to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the IELTS Master’s Award is awarded annually for the Master’s-level dissertation or thesis in English that makes the most significant contribution to the field of language testing.
TOEFL®Grants and Awards
ETS and the TOEFL®Board sponsor nine TOEFLgrants and awards each year for work in foreign or second language research, teaching, or assessment and international higher education.
The IFSA Foundation
The IFSA Foundation was founded to assist the continuing advancement of international education through direct and indirect support of study abroad by undergraduate students from U.S. colleges and universities. The Foundation seeks to provide financial assistance to U.S. colleges and universities, governmental organizations, and other not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organizations with the goal of furthering the international study abroad of undergraduate students. The Directors of the Foundation express an interest in the development of effective research tools designed to encourage broader support for the field.
Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships The Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) has established these fellowships to provide support for doctoral research focused on U.S. undergraduate study abroad. Directors of Graduate Studies (or in the absence of a departmental DGS, a Chair) are invited to nominate a qualified doctoral candidate for a Fellowship. Awards up to $20,000 will be awarded to outstanding doctoral candidates.
The Spencer Foundation - Research Grants
The Spencer Foundation provides funding for investigations that promise to yield new knowledge about education in the United States or abroad. The Foundation funds research grants that range in size from smaller grants that can be completed within one year to larger, multi-year endeavors.
The Spencer Foundation - Fellowship Awards
The Spencer Foundation's fellowship programs support scholars engaged in educational research at different stages of their professional lives. The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.
The Teagle Foundation
The Teagle Foundation's commitment to promoting and strengthening liberal education grounds all of their grantmaking. Their programs generally encourage collaboration among institutions, seeking to generate new knowledge on issues of importance to higher education. They are further committed to widely disseminating this knowledge, which they hope will be useful to faculty and institutions beyond those initially funded. The Foundation's signature grantmaking initiative focuses on Outcomes and Assessment.
The Forum on Education Abroad Undergraduate Research Awards
The Forum Undergraduate Research Awards showcase the most rigorous and significant undergraduate research that either occurs as part of education abroad programs or focuses on education abroad itself. The Forum Undergraduate Research Awards provide the opportunity for awardees to present their research at the Forum on Education Abroad International Conference, and for a larger number of students to have their papers published in a special issue of Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad. Collaborative research projects conducted jointly and co-authored by students and faculty are also encouraged.
American Educational Research Association (AERA)
The AERA Grants Program offers Research Grants for doctoral-level researchers and Dissertation Grants for advanced doctoral students (at the dissertation writing stage) who conduct studies of education policy or practice using quantitative methods. The research must include the analysis of data from at least one of the large-scale, national or international data sets supported by NCES or NSF.
