Cross-Border Education

"Cross-Border Education" is now the catchword for the expansion of higher education beyond the nation-state borders. Borderless education can refer to dual/joint degree programs; branch campuses; and virtual, on-line education.

Publications

The United Nations has two general publications on this topic.
The American Council on Education has recently published Venturing Abroad: Delivering U.S. Degrees Through Overseas Branch Campuses and Programs discussion what institutions are doing, the strategies they are pursuing, the leadership issues and challenges, and the hot spots of cross-border activity.

Dual/Joint Degree programs

Dual/Joint Degree programs require the institutions involved to review a variety of institutional, governmental, and international regulations. The John F. Kennedy Institute and the DAAD offer an example (36kb Icon PDF 16) referring to the steps involved.

European Union-Atlantis Program - Dual/Joint Degree Programs

The Department of Education is currently encouraging dual/joint degrees between the United States and Europe through the European Union - United States Atlantis Program.

A powerpoint describing the EU-Atlantis Program (41kb Icon PPT 16) and the process in creating a transatlantic degree was presented at the 2007 AIEA conference and has been made available to NAFSA.
