WASHINGTON, November 7, 2005 – Numerous new reports and events are planned for the week of November 14 – 18, the sixth annual International Education Week.


REPORTS FOR RELEASE MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14
(to be released on an embargoed basis on Thursday, November 10):

Fall 2005 Joint Foreign Student Enrollment Survey

This snapshot survey of foreign student enrollments in the United States was conducted jointly by the following partners: American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), American Council on Education (ACE), Association of American Universities (AAU), Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), Institute of International Education (IIE), NAFSA: Association of International Educators, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC).


NAFSA Report:  The Economic Benefits of International Education to the
2004 – 2005

NAFSA's annual Economic Impact Statements estimate the amount of money foreign students spend in the to support their education. The reports, which include spending on tuition and fees and on living expenses, offer national and state-by-state breakdowns as well as data for major institutions of higher education in each state. The analysis is based on tuition and living expense data from the College Board and enrollment figures from IIE’s Open Doors 2005 report.

Institute of International Education’s Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange 2005
, the authoritative annual report on international educational exchange in the United States, including new foreign student enrollment figures for 2004 – 2005 and study abroad statistics for 2003 – 2004.

The Report of the Commission on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program
This bipartisan federal commission is expected to recommend a national program to significantly increase the number of Americans studying abroad, with emphasis on developing nations and underserved populations.


NOVEMBER 14 EVENT:

Presentation of NAFSA Global Leader Award to Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R – N.Y.)

NAFSA will present a Global Leader Award to Congressman Sherwood Boehlert, chair of the House Science Committee.  Rep. Boehlert held a series of hearings and commissioned GAO analyses on post-9/11 visa issues as they affected scientific exchange.  The hearings and the GAO studies were crucial in persuading the Department of State to address excessive MANTIS security clearance delays.  The award will be presented in Rep. The NAFSA Global Leader Award is given to elected officials who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in advancing international education issues on the national agenda. The award recognizes leaders for a “commitment to advancing 's ability to lead in a global society."

“Dialogue, Not Monologue:  International Educational Exchange and Public Diplomacy”

NOVEMBER 18 NAFSA REPORT:

2005 Simon Awards/Release of NAFSA Internationalization Report

The NAFSA Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization recognizes outstanding achievements by a college or university in the area of campus internationalization. The award is named for the late Senator Paul Simon (D – Ill.), who identified international education as an issue of crucial importance for the future strength and security of the country.

This year’s awardees will be featured in the 2005 edition of the NAFSA report Internationalizing the Campus: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities, which showcases institutions that are doing outstanding and innovative work in international education. Three other outstanding international programs are spotlighted in the report.

The 2005 Simon Award recipients are Colby College, Colgate University, Howard Community College, the University of California - Los Angeles, and the University of Kansas.  The 2005 spotlighted schools are Columbus State Community College, El Camino College, and the University of Denver.
