Advocacy Tip of the Month, August 2006
The Advocacy Tip of the Month is meant to help further your knowledge of grassroots advocacy while offering tips to effectively engage your elected officials. Each month, we will give you information on the tip with action steps to take relating to that month’s tip. This information is distributed to all registered users of ACT and posted in NAFSA.news.
Primary elections are held in all states where there is more than one candidate per party running for an elected position. Many states have held their primary elections already while others will happen soon. Through the NAFSA Take Action Center, you can see a listing of upcoming primary elections.
This year’s election will happen during many of the Regional Conferences. If you plan to be traveling for your regional conference on November 7, check with your state to see how to file your absentee ballot.
Register to Vote
With the midterm elections right around the corner (November 7, 2006), if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to register to vote! As a U.S. citizen, it’s a civic duty to participate in the election process. As you know, the election cycle for members of Congress and the President happen on even numbered years. Members of the House of Representatives are elected every two years, Senators every six years and the President every four years.Primary elections are held in all states where there is more than one candidate per party running for an elected position. Action Steps for August:
- If you are not yet registered to vote, register today! To access a voter registration form, please visit the Elections and Candidates link on the NAFSA Take Action Center. Click on your state to fill out the appropriate registration form.
- Encourage your students and colleagues to register. They can use the same website listed above to access their voter registration form.
- Register for the Advocacy Centered Team (ACT) or if you’re already registered, encourage your colleagues and students to register. By participating in ACT, you will receive advocacy opportunities in your e-mail about legislation that affects international education and exchange.
