Advocacy Tip of the Month, October 2006

The Advocacy Tip of the Month is meant to help further your knowledge of grassroots advocacy while offering tips to effectively engage your elected officials. Each month, we will give you information on the tip with action steps to take relating to that month’s tip. This information is distributed to all registered users of ACT and posted in NAFSA.news.

Get Ready to Vote

The general election for a third of the Senate seats and all of the seats in the House of Representatives will be held on November 7, 2006. For U.S. citizens, it’s a civic duty to participate in the election process. Remember, every vote counts!

U.S. citizens who will be living outside the United States in November have a few steps they must take to ensure that they receive an absentee ballot. For those living overseas, even temporarily, there is a federal form called the Federal Postcard Application (FPCA) that should be used to request an absentee ballot. Get more information on requesting the FPCA.

Action Steps for October:

1. Mark your calendar to vote on November 7, and remind your friends, family, and students to
    cast their ballots!
a. If you are unsure of your polling place or what you will need to cast your ballot, please
visit your State Board of Elections Web site. You can find the site by putting your state's
name and Board of Elections into any Web browser (for example, “Virginia Board of
    Elections”).
b. Many of NAFSA's Regional Conferences will be held around the same time as Election Day.     If you will be traveling on November 7 because of a regional conference, don’t forget to
request an absentee ballot. To obtain an absentee ballot, contact your state Board of
    Elections office.

2. If you have not yet registered to vote, please visit the Take Action Center to see if you still have
time before the November elections. Most states will let you register through at least the first part
    of October.

3. Register for the Advocacy Centered Team (ACT) or if you’re already registered, encourage your
colleagues and students to register. By participating in ACT, you will receive advocacy
opportunities in your e-mail about legislation that affects international education and exchange.
