President Renews His Commitment to Comprehensive Immigration Reform
On Thursday, October 26, U.S. President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act (H.R. 6061) that authorizes 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border, along with additional measures to deter and identify persons crossing at the border. After months of debate on comprehensive immigration reform, the U.S. House and U.S. Senate were unable to reach a compromise, leading to the passage of this enforcement-only bill.
During the bill-signing ceremony, the president indicated his ongoing support for comprehensive immigration reform. The President believes that the Secure Fence Act is a positive first step towards a more complete reformation of a system that is not currently working. View a White House Fact Sheet on the new law.
