Senate Immigration Reform Bill Shelved
On June 28, the Senate compromise comprehensive immigration reform bill (S. 1639) was shelved when the Senate failed to obtain the 60 votes needed to limit debate on the bill and thereby avoid a filibuster.
After the vote to limit debate failed, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R-Nev.) stated that the Senate would return to the immigration reform debate at a later date, but he was not sure when this would occur. House leadership has previously indicated that they will not move a comprehensive immigration reform bill if the Senate was unable to pass a bill.
The outlook for comprehensive immigration reform this year continues to be uncertain. NAFSA will continue to participate in the process and provide more information as it becomes available.
