Senator Cornyn Introduces SKIL Act

May 5, 2006

On May 2, 2006, Senator John Cornyn (R-Tex.) introduced the Securing Knowledge, Innovation and Leadership (SKIL) Act (S. 2691). The SKIL bill focuses on STEM degree seekers and highly skilled professionals.

While NAFSA endorses the provisions of the SKIL Act, NAFSA supports comprehensive immigration reform. The interrelated nature of the challenges and opportunities of immigration, coupled with the current political environment, require that there be a holistic approach to immigration reform.

We are at an historic moment in American history, with an opportunity to reform U.S. immigration law for the twenty-first century. Comprehensive immigration reform offers an opportunity to reaffirm our history as a nation that welcomes immigrants, and serve U.S. economic needs, while also enhancing national security.
