NAFSA Endorses Recommendations to Restore Academic Exchange with Cuba

Posted January 8, 2007

In December, NAFSA's Board of Directors voted to endorse recommendations to restore academic exchange with Cuba contained in a report from the Latin America Working Group Education Fund titled Retreat from Reason: U.S. Cuban Academic Relations and the Bush Administration.

After discussion, the Board voted to endorse the recommendations as follows:

The Board of Directors of NAFSA: Association of International Educators endorses the recommendations of the Latin America Working Group Education Fund's report, "Retreat from Reason: U.S.-Cuban Academic Relations and the Bush Administration." The Board takes this action in support of the principle of the free exchange of ideas, and condemns the absence of free expression in Cuba.

In the summer of 2004, NAFSA also expressed strong opposition to a regulation that substantially curtails legitimate educational exchange with Cuba.
