GAO Report on Global Competitiveness and U.S. Higher Education Forum
On January 23, 2007, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report of a discussion forum it convened last fall to examine issues related to whether the United States will continue to attract an appropriate share of talented international students to its universities and to its workforce after they graduate. NAFSA Executive Director and CEO, Marlene M. Johnson was among the national leaders and experts from government, academia, and industry selected to participate in the forum. The report states that the forum participants generally agreed that the United States needs to develop a strategic plan for international student recruitment, to reevaluate the immigration system to remove barriers for talented international students, and to explore new sources of international students.
