NAFSA Comments on Student Intern Proposed Rule

On July 30, 2007, NAFSA submitted a comment letter regarding the June 5 proposed rule, "Exchange Visitor Program—College and University Students, Student Interns."

The comment letter endorses the proposed rule, which seeks to establish an intern subcategory within the J-1 College and University Students category, a substantial improvement over what the State Department proposed originally in April 2006. However, the letter also points out several areas within the proposal that require improvement prior to finalization, namely the enrollment and field of study requirements, the restrictions on clinical and patient care internships, the standardization of program requirements for academic and private sector sponsors, and the need for a streamlined designation process.
