SPECIAL EDITION
House Passes Simon Study Abroad Act
I am excited to announce that yesterday afternoon, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act (HR 1469). This is a very big victory for education abroad and the field of international education as a whole! And I want to congratulate and thank each of you who took the time to write or call your representatives through NAFSA's Take Action Center! Since legislation has been introduced this Congress, more than 2,000 messages have been received on Capitol Hill in support of the Simon Study Abroad Act.

This is the first step--the first victory--in establishing and funding the Simon Foundation. And it could not have happened without our collective efforts to voice our support for this legislation that will widen access to opportunities of education abroad for U.S. students.

This bill has seen a lot of success thus far, but there is still much to do and each of us has a role to play. We need to keep our eye on the prize and maintain the momentum. If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to sign up for ACT, NAFSA's Advocacy Centered Team, and indicate the areas of interest you want to be notified about, including "Education Abroad." Through this grassroots network, everyone has the opportunity to make their voices heard on issues important to international education.

In the coming weeks, your help will be needed again. The U.S. Senate will be voting on the legislation and we will need to generate as much support in the Senate as we did in the House. I look forward to seeing the number of our messages going to the Hill grow, and therewith also the support for this legislation from our Senators.

Thank you, again, and congratulations!

Larry Bell
Vice President for Public Policy and Practice
